This chocolate mug cake uses simple ingredients that you probably already have at home. All of the ingredients are mixed into one mug/bowl so there’s minimal dishes used. Texture wise, this healthy mug cake is more on the dense side since we are using a gluten-free flour made out of oats, but it is still delicious nonetheless. Great as a dessert or even as a pre workout snack.

Nutritional benefits:
–BANANAS – if you have a more ripe, spotty bananas it’s going to be sweeter, softer in texture and higher in soluble fiber. Less ripe, closer to green bananas are going to be less sweet and high in resistant starch, which acts as a prebiotic to feed the good bacteria in your gut. They are a good source of potassium, vitamin B6 and vitamin C, as well as antioxidants.
–OATS – they’re a whole grain and a have soluble fiber, which can help to lower blood cholesterol levels, keep blood sugar stable and increase satiety.
–CACAO – Cacao powder is just more minimally processed cocoa powder. When cocoa powder is roasted, some of the nutrients are destroyed, so cacao powder is going to have a higher nutrient content.
Not only does it add a chocolatey flavor, but it also provides minerals such as magnesium, manganese, copper and non-heme iron. It also has a high amount of antioxidants due to the presence of polyphenols including flavonoids and tannins. They are known to be protective against cancer and have anti-inflammatory properties.
Fun fact – it’s scientific name is theobroma cacao which translates to “food of the gods.”


Chocolate Mug Cake
Ingredients
- 1/2 banana mashed
- 1 tbsp peanut butter
- Splash vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp oat flour
- 1 tbsp cacao powder
- 1/4 tsp baking powder
- Pinch salt
- 1 tbsp dark chocolate chips
Instructions
- Mash the banana in a large, microwave safe mug or ramekin.
- Add the peanut butter and vanilla to the mug and mix well.
- Add the dry ingredients – oat flour, cacao powder, baking powder and salt. Mix until just combined.
- Microwave for 1.5 minutes or until the center is set.
- Add the chocolate chips to the top and enjoy!
